i love how the artist takes everyday ideas (like feeding the birds/ elephants) and turns it on it’s head. i especially like the (sleeping!) bear portrait and the vegetarian lion. just genius.
I love the irony of how Irene Norman uses such vague words as cleverness and has no ideas of her own in her criticism of this,
I liked, dark – cute seems to be the epitaph of this century so far.
i was going to comment on how every single comic made me laugh but after reading the same thing over and over, i think i’m better of saying how much more these comments made me laugh! irene’s obviously a schmuck, i hope she came back to read this

I didn’t laugh, but that didn’t mean I hated them. I’m an artist myself, so I guess I just like other stuff, but that doesn’t mean that this work is bad at all. I did find the jokes a bit stale, though. I though the best one was the first one, but I also heard that it was done before.
Can someone explain what “depends” is even saying?
To me it seems like he is starting out by saying “You are all idiots for thinking that these are good!” then he moves on to say “Public opinion decides what is good!”… So, public opinion is clearly that they are good. “Depends” is in the minority (at least among the people commenting) and has, according to his own definition, no valid reason to say that we are wrong for liking it.
And I really, really don’t understand the comparison between “better one in your hand than two in the bush” and a picture of a bear wearing a suit made out of human skin or an elephant eating a baby… They aren’t really the same kind of thing, so I’m not entirely certain if “Depends” even really looked at the pictures. Some people just love to complain at the top of their voice, without any particular reason, as soon as they see something that other people like. They have to say “Look at me, look at me, I don’t like this, I’m SPECIAL!”
Let me be the first person to say thank you Irene Norman, whoever the hell you are, for you annoyingly antagonistic criticism. You are a bitch, but you made reading all these comments funny as hell! Also, Depends, don’t try and make out like your opinion or the opinion of the general public is not subjective. You may think money or earning power is the central and most objective measure of an artist’s skill, but there are those of us who do not wish to link art and money together in any meaningful way. Art for art’s sake! Criticism be damned! Good stuff, Sheharzad. Keep it coming!
Comment by depends, get it? — August 2, 2009 @ 9:49 am
To be horribly honest, ->I THINK<-(It’s an opinion and doesn’t have to be true) that the only reason that people are commenting this so much is because of the “aliens vs military girls”, which inclines them to post good comments. I imagined the website with aliens and without the aliens and in my mind It wasn’t that good anymore. They are funny though especially the elephant one and the bear one. *giggles!*
My name says it all, I cant take a joke which portraits a baby getting hurt, cause Im frustrated. Oh and “depends”, get over yourself. Read more books, instead book extracts and quotes books, get it?. Heres is another quote you maybe missed from your Bernard Shaw best quotes book:
“A fool’s brain digests philosophy into folly, science into superstition, and art into pedantry. Hence University education.”
I for one don’t think Irene Norman was wrong in those observations. A very important part of artwork is the critiquing process, and Irene was simply offering an opinion for the artist. However, it is for the artist to decide whether or not the advice was appropriate, not up to us observers.
Irene, I find the artist to have a definative style, what with color schemes and consistancy of work. The illustrations meet any technical drawing standard I’ve ever heard of, in any university or in any teaching of art/creation. I personally think these peices to be marvelous attributes to the artist’s portfolio.
As for cleverness, I don’t think it’s for you or anyone to judge. The humor will appeal to a certain type, which is obviously not including you. It may not even be including me, but I’ll readily acknoledge talent when I see it.
Take the peices for what they are, and embrace them. Constructive criticism is an art you’ve yet to master, Irene.
irene is an idiot. these are good. “work on your cleverness” has to be the stupidest thing ive ever heard someone say in my life.
the illustration is good. id like to see your work irene.
33 (comment 31) knows what their talking about. Irene, you are indeed an ignorant bitch. and Depends, get a girlfriend and get over yourself. Yes, Gary Lawson has probably made these jokes before, but honestly, what jokes hasn’t he made? the dude has made more comics than god, excuse me, God, with a capitol G, for all you Irene’s out there. I saw the Gary Lawson comics and this still made me smile.
your ideas are horrible, drawings are good. People hear misuse the word irony…nothing ‘ironic’ about these drawing, what these drawing are is “lame”..except for the last one with the elephants that was twistedly funny.
